I don't know about you, but I've been paying very close attention to the news lately.
I used to only watch the first ten minutes or so of my local news. Which is pathetic to say the least
see for yourself here: http://www.atv.ca/home/news.aspx. I would often read the online paper as well.
I know Im not one to talk but our local paper seems as though it was edited by a seventh grader, see for yourself here:http://www.lfpress.com/. I feel like we deserve better as a city, as a people even. I want to know why politicians make some of the decisions they do. I especially want to know why all their big decisions are not voted upon. When I vote for someone I don't expect that to be my final say in all their big decisions. Im pretty sure that the makers of the Democratic system didn't expect about half the people who are eligible to vote to lazily saunter down to the polling station every couple of years to grant some schmuck ultimate power. Where did we go wrong as a society? Why does it seem as though "they" make politics hard to understand or boring? I know the media can do better than that. "They" made me fully understand the complex relationships between Dylan, Kelly and Brenda on 90210, and I was only nine years old! Why then, do I find it so difficult to understand the relations between Pakistan the USA and Israel? Im fully capable of understanding it if it's laid out in an accessible way. The media has really dropped the ball on this one. I shouldn't have to wait until world events are in a history book in order to get the whole story.
Im then forced to scour the internet for the "truth" this can lead one down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories, before you know it your listening to an Oprah show backwards with a backbeat of techno music while images of the US Dollar bill go by. These people who make these psycho videos declaring one celebrity or another the antichrist have a tendency to deter people from the search for alternative news. Maybe so and so is a Freemason, maybe they are satan worshippers; I don't care! I just want to know why we are going to drop 300 or more bombs on a town in Libya, and how I can stop it from happening. On election day my vote didn't mean "yes, please go kill innocent civilians".
I saw a video by Charlie Vietch who is an activist from an organization called "The Love Police" sometimes I agree with him and sometimes I think he is stirring up trouble for attention, overall his message is one of peace and truth so it's hard to not agree with him on some things; anyways Charlie did this video showing victims of multiple wars that the US and Canada have been involved in. I saw children whose skin had been burned off , fathers holding dead babies faces to the camera while their wives sobbed off to the side. Needless to say I then had a good hard consciousness altering cry. It's so easy to imagine my neighbourhood smoldering, my neighbours running around clutching their burnt children. We are so accustomed to peace in our developed countries that we can't mentally associate our projected military budgets during election time, to the lives of men, women and children on the other side of the world. Why do we let "them" get away with this shit? Why do "they" "accidentally" bomb orphanages and our protestors get beaten and harassed? Conspiracy theories aside; this shit has gotten out of hand. As a law abiding citizen I want to be able to trust my government and police. As a human being I wan't decent people to be able to live in peace. I wan't children to have a safe warm place to lay their heads at night. I want a world of well fed happy people free to do what makes them happy. Im pretty sure most people want these things too. Conservative, Liberal, Democrat, Republican etc, we all need the same things, we all want the same things. Can't we all just get along, hasn't 2000+ years of disagreements taught you anything? We will always disagree, but their is always another way to resolve an argument. Would you immediately react to your neighbour suggesting you 'go in' on a new fence together by shooting him in the face? If he told you "hey your fire pit is stinking up my house and air quality" would you respond by killing his wife and son? No? Me neither.
I think if we were to strip "them" of their weapons and armour and force them to only fight with their fists, they would be able to eventually come to some sort of agreement.
I sometimes wonder what happened to the original hippies, not the super drugged out hippies, but the ones who really had a voice. I think those hippies (wherever they are) would be ashamed of my generation. With our privliges, our capabilities for sharing information. How is it that we can't organize ourselves together to stop the tyranny. Why is it that the best we can do is play an Obama speech backwards looking for the mention of Satan, instead of protecting the rights of people worldwide. What a bloody shame.
