I had a wonderful Easter this year. Easter has always been my favourite holiday, but not because of the religious theme. I love Spring the most of all the seasons, bunnies frolicking in my back yard after a long hard Winter have a special way of restoring hope and joy into my colourless Wintery soul.
Tulips (which are my favourite flower) also love Spring, Lilac Bushes are starting to show signs of life, and the birds are really chirpin. Life in Ontario has it's up's and down's but Spring in Ontario has the power to move mountains of winter induced sadness. It makes me understand why ancient people associated this time of year with the resurrection of a beautiful kind spirit. I believe the "spirit" we always talk about was merely a reference to the spirit of mankind. Spring lifted mankind out of our terribly difficult desolate lives and rewarded us with beautiful sights and smells, an easy abundance of life, food and resources; less strife and what-not. It's almost no wonder that we had to associate these life blessings, which made our lives easier with a kind wise 'God' , an all knowing being who blessed the worthy with an eternal spring of sorts.
It's hard to deny what Spring does to people. Spring brings people together like nothing else;
In my neighbourhood alone I have already seen people who I thought may have died and were potentially rotting away in their homes emerge. Pale faced neighbours are wandering around their yards; surveying the damage of a blustery winter. They wave tentatively, having forgotten the days we used to chat over the hedge. People drive much faster too, their windows down blaring loud music.
During the dead of winter I can go to a park and only see one or two other people, but in the spring EVERYONE is there. It warms my heart to see my fellow citizens enjoying nature and it's blessing's with their families. People who normally crowd around the television on a saturday afternoon will venture out to feed old cereal to ducks. The fact that weather has the ability to change our lives so much blows me away.
I just reread what I wrote, and realized I sound like a hippie.
The real reason I clicked on 'New Post' this evening was to update
whomever reads my blog with a quirky story about Easter. I will try again.
I had a wonderful Easter with my in-laws. We got spoiled quite a bit and each time I opened candy laden gifts, I could picture my ass getting bigger.
I don't need a chocolate easter bunny that weighs 1 pound, so when my husband and I were leaving his Dad's place and I saw a bored looking little boy I immediately said to myself "he needs that candy more than I do".
I stood in the street as he walked towards me holding out a huge bag of multi-coloured candy.
"Hey do you want some candy?" I said to the boy.
The instant the words were out of my mouth I realized the creepy connotations they evoked, but since I had already said them I figured 'what the hell' and handed over the candy to the obviously stoked little boy.
His Dad walked around the corner and I felt guilty at once.
His Dad looked at me very strange. His chest puffed up and he clenched his fists.
The whole thing was disarming.
It made me realize just how scared everyone is of predators. I'll admit their are a lot of crazy people out there who have done some awful shit, but do you really think a couple of people standing a foot away from smiling/waving Grandparents would steer your kid wrong? Do we look that sinister?
It's sad that people don't talk to each other anymore, to say hello to a stranger on the street, or to be kind always seems creepy to the majority of people.
I think we should all fear the people who assume the worst. The judgemental ones. The ones who put signs on their strollers that read " don't touch me"
They fear the worst because their thoughts are awful.
what the fuck am I talking about?
